Elephant ReID for field operations
NWA India’s Project Ashwatthama documents individually identifiable elephants in the North Bengal landscape. Together, we are assessing whether AI-assisted re-identification can help field teams narrow an elephant’s identity from sparse photographs, while making proper use of expert field observations and structured records.
Habitat Robotics will organise the shared data and compare visual, metadata, and field-observation approaches using held-out observations where the dataset supports them. The assessment will examine both ranked candidate retrieval and exploratory visual grouping, while documenting the limits created by image quality, annotation consistency, and incomplete views.
